TheLaboratoryofSoftMatterPhysicsoftheUniversitéLibredeBruxelles(ULB)inBelgiumissearchingforhighlymotivatedcandidateswithexcellentacademicrecordstoperformaPhDinthetopic“Formationofbiomimeticmembranelayersonnanostructuredsurfaces:Fundamentalsandapplications”.TheselectedPhDcandidateshouldapplyforfundstotheChinaScholarshipCouncil(CSC)withintheframeworkoftheULB-CSCagreementtosupport30PhDsperyear.

Shortdescriptionoftheproject:

Increasingdemandsonimplantdevicesmakethenextgenerationofimplantablematerialsfeaturethecapacitytoprovidesustainedelutionofgrowthfactorsand/orantibioticstofurthersupportboneregenerationand/orcounteractbacterialcolonization.Nano/Mesoporousmetalsdisplayalargesurfaceareaandhaverecentlyattractedsignificantinterestduetopotentialapplicationsincatalysisorenergyharvestingandstorage.Theirlargesurfaceareaandhighly-tunableproperties,aspromisingmaterialscandidatesforbiotechnologyapplicationsmakethemidealplatformsforbiosensorswithenhancedsensitivityandtheirdrugcapacityabilitywithintheirporousinteriormakesthemtemplatesforsustaineddrugrelease.Integratingnp-metalswithstimuli-responsivesoftmatter(lipids,polymersystems)canbeapointofdeparturetodevelopnovelbiosensingplatformsanddetection-drugdeliverysystems.Yet,therearemanyopenandpracticallyunexploredfundamentalquestionsregardingtheirformation,surfacefunctionalizationandfunctioningmechanisms.

Theaimofthisprojectistofabricate,functionalizenanoporousmetals,i.e.,nanoporousgold(np-Au)andnanoporoustitaniumandevaluatethecapabilityofnp-Auandnp-Tiasbiosensorplatformscontrolleddrugreleaseplatforms.Goldhasmanydesirableattributes,includinghighelectricalconductivitytodetectelectrophysiologicalsignalsandtunablemorphology.Titaniumisbio
